Swabian Algebra and Geometry

SWAG is the joint research seminar of the Institute for Discrete Structures and Symbolic Computation (University of Stuttgart), the research groups Algebra und Combinatorial algebraic geometry (University of Tübingen) and the Institute of Algebra and Number Theory (University of Ulm). The focus lies on arithmetic, toric and tropical geometry, representation theory of groups and algorithmic methods. It takes place once per term at one of the three participating universities.

The next SWAG meeting takes place on
Friday, July 4, 2025 from 14:00 - 18:00 pm at the University of Stuttgart, Pfaffenwaldring 57, room 8.122.

Speakers are:
Prof. Dr. Daniele Agostini (University of Tübingen) "Matroid strata in the moduli space of pointed curves"
Abstract: Any curve of positive genus g can be embedded in a projective space by its canonical map, as long as the curve is not hyperelliptic. This way, any n distinct points on the curve define a realizable matroid on n points of rank at most This can be used to define natural matroid strata in the moduli space M_g,n as well as a tropical analogue.
Luca Remke (University of Stuttgart) "Computing full exceptional sequences using Oscar"
Justus Springer (University of Tübingen) "Big Data in Algebraic Geometry and the Julia Programming Language"
Prof. Dr. Christian Stump (Ruhr-Universität Bochum)
„Chow polynomials of matroids“
Abstract: Chow polynomials of matroids are the Hilbert series of their Chow ring. We will start with reviewing the history and the importance of these concepts. We then discuss other polynomials motivated from general poset theory and from number theorey, and show how these related concepts can be unified using ab- and cd-indices of finite bounded graded posets. This work is partially joint work with Galen Dorpalen-Barry, Elena Hoster, and Josh Maglione.
